ISTAT Jetrader: Q&A with Zeevo Group’s Sophie McAuley

SEATTLE — July 11, 2023 — The summer 2023 issue of Jetrader featured a Q&A with our Commercial Outreach and Client Success Lead Sophie McAuley, who shared about her experience building a career in the aviation industry, as well as provided insight into the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT)’s professional development programs and their potential impact on the course of one’s career.

Jetrader: What do you like most about the aviation industry?

Sophie McAuley (SM): There are numerous aspects that I appreciate and admire about this dynamic and ever-evolving sector. Aviation has the power to connect people, cultures and businesses across the globe and plays a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, facilitating trade and promoting cultural exchange. Being part of an industry that has such a significant impact on the world is a privilege.

Jetrader: What is the most challenging part of your profession?

SM: One of the most challenging aspects of my profession is the constant need to make complex decisions in a changing business landscape. The challenge is that these decisions often involve multiple variables and uncertainties. I must carefully weigh the potential risks and rewards, consider the long-term impact and assess the possible consequences for all stakeholders involved. This requires a deep understanding of the industry, market trends, competitive dynamics and the organization’s strategic objectives.

Jetrader: Who has had the greatest influence on your career?

SM: I have worked with many talented individuals throughout my career, each leaving their mark on my professional journey. However, Joey Johnsen is one individual who stands out as an invaluable source of inspiration throughout my career. Her knowledge, unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership skills have profoundly impacted my professional growth.

As chair of the ISTAT Foundation’s Internship and Mentorship Committee, Joey’s emphasis on continuous learning and pushing the boundaries of what is possible has been instrumental in driving my career forward. Joey’s integrity and strong moral compass have served as a constant reminder of the importance of ethics in business. She consistently leads by example, treats others with respect and conducts herself professionally. These principles have become the cornerstone of my own leadership philosophy and will continue to guide me in my role at Zeevo Group LLC.

Jetrader: What was your first job?

SM: My first job was a significant milestone in my professional development, and it laid the foundation for the skills and principles that have guided my career. Fresh out of university, I began my first job as an economic development officer in local government. My responsibilities encompassed a diverse range of tasks. I quickly learned the importance of adaptability and the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The challenges I faced were both exciting and demanding.

I encountered steep learning curves and had to navigate unfamiliar terrain. I look back fondly at the memories and experiences from my first job, recognizing them as the stepping stones that propelled me toward my current position.
